X-ray

Using a low level of radiation, an X-ray is a procedure that can produce images of the inside the body. They are used at Sevenoaks Medical Centre to help our consultants diagnose and detect a series of conditions.

Understanding X-rays and how they can help you

Many problems can be identified with an X-ray, especially those concerning bones and joints. They can also be used to diagnose conditions involving soft tissue and body organs.

Our medical team use X-rays to help detect a range of conditions. This includes:

  • Bone breaks and fractures
  • Conditions involving the spine, such as scoliosis
  • Problems concerning the lungs, including lung cancer and pneumonia
  • Dysphagia, a problem with swallowing
  • Non-cancerous and cancerous bone tumours
  • Breast cancer
  • Heart problems, such as heart failure

Explaining the X-ray procedure

A type of radiation that passes through the body, X-rays can’t be felt and they can’t be seen by the naked eye. Quick and painless, the whole procedure lasts just a few minutes. The X-ray itself only takes a fraction of a second.

The X-ray machine looks like a tube containing a large light bulb. The radiographer aims the machine at the part of your body that’s being examined. You usually lie down on a table or stand against a flat surface – depending on what part of your body is having the X-ray done – for the procedure.

In order to stop the X-ray images from blurring, you will need to keep very still while the procedure is performed.

You shouldn’t need to prepare before you have an X-ray. You can also eat and drink, as normal, but may need to stop taking certain medication. We will discuss this with you. Pregnant women are also recommended not to have an X-ray, unless in an emergency.

For the procedure, it’s advisable to wear loose fitted clothing, but best not to wear anything containing metal, such as studded clothes or jewellery, which you’ll need to remove beforehand.
