His initial training was at St Thomas’ Hospital, London and then at The Western Eye Hospital in Marylebone.  In 1991 he was appointed a Registrar at Moorfields Eye Hospital.  In 1993 he was awarded a Fullbright scholarship to study in the USA and spent a year at Columbia University and then Cornell University in New York.  He was reappointed  to Moorfields Eye Hospital as a Senior Registrar in 1994, where he completed his training.
